Parcle Of Land
Meldrim, Georgia was purchased by Judge Peter W. Meldrim. That is how our little community here in of Meldrim came by it's name. The Judge purchased the parcel of land in 1878 for the purchase price of $ 340.00. The land was being surveying for home sites in 1890, it finished in 1898.The Judge Meldrim was a superior Court Judge of the Savannah, Georgia District.
Judge Meldrim had a daughter, her name was Ms. Caroline Meldrim. Judge Peter W. Meldrim used to go visit the area of Meldrim, he go hunting there with his friends, friends of the President of the central of Georgia Mr. Egan. Judge would take the train in the mornings and the train would drop him off in the afternoon. Now around this time there were only one or two homes scattered throughout the small community of Meldrim,Georgia. The small quiet community had no name. The area was used for camping area for the famous George Hussars. The earthen Breastworks are noticeable behind the Oak Hill Cemetery from the Hussars training grounds.
Ms Caroline Meldrim, daughter of the Judge Peter W. Meldrim stated that her father arrived on one occasion while he get off of the train and saw a sign at his stop Meldrim, Georgia. Finally this is how the community of Meldrim,Georgia came by it's name. The Judge Meldrim decided built himself a home what is known as the Old Barber Field. The land had to be surveyed and after they completed the survey the lots sold as little as $25.00 to $50.00. The higher prices homes were most expensive where built next to the railroads and which became the shopping business district.
By the early 1900's there were six stores where the Scout building stand, it was a two story building residents on the second floor, the store was on the first floor. It was owned and run by Mr. Marion Cox. The Post Office near the Cox building, ran by Mrs. Sally Harvey and her daughter Ms. Ruth Harvey. Between the Harvey's, The Stone store was another store owned by John Fillman.
